The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) contains a comprehensive description of the processes involved in managing IT infrastructures as services. ITIL is a best practice for IT service delivery and infrastructure management. It was developed in the late '80s when IT professionals gathered to develop a comprehensive, integrated life cycle for all areas of IT service management.

Levels of certification in the ITIL qualification Schemes:
  • Foundation Certificate
This is designed to provide a foundation level of knowledge in IT Service Management. It is aimed at all personnel who wish to become familiar with the best practices for IT Service Management, as defined in the ITIL guidelines. In particular, it enables people to understand the terminology used within the ITIL approach. The certificate qualification can be gained by taking a short multiple-choice exam, at the end of a three-day course.

  • Practitioner's Certificate
This is aimed at those who are responsible within their organisation for designing specific processes within the IT Service Management discipline, and performing the activities that belong to those processes. While the Manager's Certificate focuses on managing ITIL-based solutions across the breadth of Service management subjects, the Practitioner's Certificates focus on the depth of understanding and application of those subjects, treating each subject as a specialism. This specific discipline certification qualification can be gained after attending a three-day practitioner's course and by passing in-course assessments and a case study based multiple-choice exam.

  • Manager's Certificate
While the Foundation Certificate is primarily focused on understanding the terminology and the Practitioner's Certificates on the processes in a specific area, the Manager's Certificate is aimed at those who need to demonstrate a capability of managing ITIL-based solutions across the breadth of the Service Management subjects. This certificate qualification can be gained by passing two three-hour written exam papers after the attendance of an accredited ten day training program.

The investment of time and money in preparing to sit for ITIL Exams is perhaps a time for most adults that bring back the fear of sitting for tests of any kind.

Official professional qualifications based on ITIL are currently offered by the following Examination Institutes:
  • ISEB (The Information Systems Examination Board) a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Computer Society.
  • EXIN - the Examination Institute for Information Science in the Netherlands.

ITIL Exams are by their very nature designed to indicate if the participant can understand and apply the theory knowledge of the ITIL Framework. And ITIL Exam can be taken at a variety of levels.

ITIL Exams - IT Service Management Foundations Certificate
*** Most ITIL Exams taken around the world are at this level
ITIL Exams - IT Service Management Practitioner Certificate
*** ITIL Exams at this level test individual process knowledge
ITIL Exams - IT Service Management Managers Certificate
*** ITIL Exams in this category are for those faced with challenges of
        implementation.

ITIL Exams for the Foundations certificate can actually be taken at any Prometric test centre around the world. ITIL Exams in the other two levels must currently be sat as a paper based test, facilitated independently.
